The County of San Diego's Department of Human Resources has a current opening for a Senior Workers' Compensation Adjuster to lead and supervise staff for our self-insured, self-administered agency.

This position may have a teleworking and flexible schedule available after an initial training period and as special work projects permit. Interviews will take place on March 19 and March 20, 2024, and job offers will be made on March 20, 2024. The successful candidate can start as early as April 5, 2024. 

 

 Senior Workers Compensation Adjusters supervise a group of Workers' Compensation Adjusters and Specialists. This position monitors claim handlers to ensure they are compliant with State regulations and our excess workers' compensation insurance standards. It provides technical guidance and training to staff who investigate, analyze and process workers' compensation claims filed by County employees and work to bring the cases to resolution either by approval; negotiated settlement, denial, or administrative hearing. This position also must exercise considerable judgment in decision making and problem solving in the interpretation and application of the Workers' Compensation Laws of California and Case Law.

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.  

  • Job Offers and Background Process begins in March 2023. (Current employees may be exempt from the background process.)

  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. (Current employees may be exempt from the pre-employment medical screening process.) 

  • Anticipated Start Date: Based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

In order to qualify, you must meet one of the following requirements: 

1. Five (5) years in the last eight (8) years of on-the-job experience adjusting California workers' compensation claims; or supervising claims adjusters handling workers' compensation claims; OR, 

2. Successfully passed the Self-Insurance Administrator's Exam (written examination) specified by Title 8, Section 15452 of the California Code of Regulations and has either: (1) worked as a claims adjuster or supervisor of workers' compensation claims continuously since passing the examination, or (2) passed the exam within the previous five (5) years; OR, 

3. Possess a Claims Adjuster Designation; AND two (2) years of on-the-job experience adjusting California workers' compensation claims; or supervising claims adjusters handling workers' compensation claims. 

Notes: Claims Adjuster must provide their Designation from previous employer prior to employment start date. Must complete 30 hours of post-designation training every two (2) years per Section 2592.02 of the California Code of Regulations. 

The following are highly desirable but not required:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Insurance Educational Association (I.E.A.) certification.

State of California Certificate of Self-Insurance Administration.

State of California Workers' Compensation Claims Administration Certificate (WCCA).

Workers' Compensation Claims Professional Certification (WCCP).
